Are you still using Windows XP? This operating system is over 12 years old, and soon Microsoft will stop producing security updates for it. Windows 7 replaced Windows XP in October 2009 (nearly 4 years ago!) and is a much more stable operating system. Windows 8 was released in October 2012 and improves on Windows 7 even further.
Windows 8 was quite controversial as it introduced two new concepts to the familiar Windows 7 operating system. One was a tiled interface, mainly for touch devices such as tablets and mobile phones, while the second was the removal of the familiar ‘Start’ button, introduced back in Windows 95.
Overall, Windows 8 is a solid operating system, and provides many benefits to the user compared to Windows XP. Of course, with each new advancement in software, they demand more from your hardware – Windows 8 may not run on very old hardware. There is a program to download from Microsoft to test your PC and ensure Windows 8 will install successfully.
As mentioned above, Microsoft will cease providing updates to Windows XP soon, so the system will be more and more susceptible to malware, exploits and virus attacks. Also, more and more software will be written with Windows 7 and 8 in mind and may no longer work in Windows XP. As an example, Office 2013 will not run on Windows XP. More and more games will also require the latest operating system.
